Students would be exposed to the richness of out of box thinking, creativity and intellectual appetite of highest order.

PROF. SUGATA MARJIT

Sugata Marjit ( born 4.12.59), a First Class Undergraduate of Presidency College (1978) and a topper of Calcutta University (1980), did his Phd at the University of Rochester under the supervision of Ronald Jones (1981-1984)

He is the Former First Distinguished Professor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. His previous positions include early faculty positions at Presidency College, Jadavpur and Monash Universities and later the Reserve Bank of India Professorship at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC), The First Sukhamay Chakravarty Chair Professorship at CESP, Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Professorship at the Indian Statistical Institute. He was the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Director of CSSSC and Chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education.

Prof. Marjit has held Visiting Professorial positions and delivered invited lectures at around 50 Universities and Institutions across continents such as the Universities of Amsterdam, Birmingham, Bonn, Copenhagen, Dresden Erasmus at Rotterdam, Geneva, Innsbruck, Konstanz, Munich, Paris III, Nottingham, Queen Mary University of London, UCL, etc. (in EU and UK) SUNY at Albany and Buffalo, Columbia, Cornell, Florida at Gainesville, Penn. State, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Washington Univ. at St. Louis etc. (in USA) Kobe, Kiyoto, Nagoya , Tokyo in (Japan), Auckland, Australian National University, Queensland, Monash, Sydney, UNSW etc. (in Australia and New Zealand), Chinese Univ., City Univ. , Poly tech University (in Hong Kong) , UIB in Beijing , National University and SMU in Singapore. He has worked at the IMF, World Bank, ADB, Federal Reserve Bank at St. Louis, WIDER etc. as a Visiting Scholar.

He has published around 300 papers in top National and International journals and volumes such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, European Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organization, Economic Theory, NATURE Climate Change , Macroeconomic Dynamics, Public Choice, European Physical Society Journal, Economic and Political Weekly , Indian Journal of Physics etc. His books, edited volumes and Articles have been published by the Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Princeton University Press, Springer NATURE etc.

He is a recipient of the Panchanan Chakrabarty Memorial award for contributions to teaching and Research in West Bengal, Mahalanobis Gold Medal of the Indian Econometric Society (2002) awarded to the most outstanding Indian economist below 45, VKRV Rao National Prize as a young Social Scientist (2003, ICSSR) and A. L. Nagar Fellowship and Gold Medal, awarded to the most outstanding Indian economist between the age group of 45 to 65 by the Indian Econometric Society (2020) and the ONLY ONE so far to receive all the above awards.

He was invited as the University wide Distinguished Visiting Fellow by the Rector of the University of Dresden in 2022 and by the Queen Mary University of London in 2018, nominated by Multiple Departments of the University.

Prof. Marjit is a professional North Indian Classical Vocalist and has performed in major concerts all around the globe, including at the famous Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroha at Varanasi, the oldest Hindustani Classical Music Festival in India at the India International Centre on the occasion of India’s 50th year of India’s independence invited by the Rajyyasabha upper house of Parliament, at the Nehru Centre London, National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai, on invitation from the Indian High Commissioner in New York and hundreds of concerts worldwide. He was awarded the State Drama (Natya) Academy Award for Musical Direction for a play in 1995.
